The Almadraba Route (Levantá)
Description
On this tour to see the Conil tuna trap, we will set off from Conil fishing port itself and sail along the coast until we reach the site of the set trap, a journey of approximately 20 minutes. Once there, we will position ourselves very close to the net itself, which is where ‘La Levantá’ takes place, so that we can see all the work carried out by the almadraberos and divers to catch these large bluefin tuna. We will explain the entire process and its history, covering both the migratory route followed by these tuna and the ancient sighting and setting techniques used for centuries in this three-thousand-year-old fishing tradition.
We will see how the captain issues orders for all the manoeuvres, whilst the divers underwater guide the tuna from the nets towards the codend – the final compartment of the net – where the ‘lift’ is finally carried out.
Here we will see how the tuna fishermen, using their boats to encircle the perimeter of the net, hoist it up to bring the tuna closer to the surface; this is when we will see the most activity in the water, with these huge fish churning the water.
Next, the divers will begin to catch these giants of the sea using the ‘Lupara’ technique, which ensures that the fish are killed with minimal stress and suffering, resulting in the highest quality in every cut and making these bluefin tuna the most exquisite and prized in the world.
Once each specimen has been caught, we will see them being hoisted by the ship’s crane; at this point, we will be able to see these magnificent creatures in their entirety, until they are carefully placed on the decks of the barges for transport by sea to the Japanese vessel or the Gadira ship in the port of Barbate.
Once the boats have left the almadraba to set sail for the Japanese vessel or the port of Barbate, we will begin our return journey to the port of Conil, where this fantastic Almadraba tour will come to an end.
